Charles George Gordon, known as Chinese Gordon, was a
remarkable man. Serving throughout his life in the British
Army, eventually reaching the rank of Major-General, Gordon
acted as commander of the Ever-Victorious Army in China
during the Taiping Rebellion and became Governor-General of
the Sudan in order to end the slave trade there. He was a
devout, if unorthodox, Christian who set an example of
heroic bravery and dedication to alleviate the suffering of
all those in need. He was sent back to evacuate the
