Lowestoft Maritime Museum

Newly refurbished, Britain’s most easterly museum is a first class modern facility which honours the town’s rich maritime heritage.

As a result of a grant from the heritage Lottery Fund, this treasure trove has been transformed and doubled in size to welcome a number of new collections. Features include a replica fish-market, a wheelhouse, a drifter cabin, a reconstruction of the last workshop of Sir Christopher Cockerell, the inventor of the hovercraft, and an audio visual room.

Historic and much loved exhibits also return in appealing and interactive displays.

Children and adults alike will enjoy a wealth of exhibits and stories from the fishing industry which created the town.

They also operate ‘I see the sea!’, a project for the under 5’s, for nursery groups/pre-schools/play-groups, with a sailor’s sack to borrow, and a visit to the museum for fun and games , all with a nautical theme.

We are an ideal destination for school groups, to discover the children’s local history. We also run a KS2 project ‘Ben’s Quest’ with resources and learning ideas for teachers, followed by a visit to the museum with activities.

Also available for hire to care homes/day groups etc are ‘Reminiscence Boxes’, which help to spark memories. These can be combined with a visit to the museum, if you wish.
