Ramsey grew up around its Abbey, founded on the edge of the
fens on a marsh surrounded island. The Abbey became one of
the most important monastic buildings in England and the
town prospered until the time of the Dissolution of the
Monasteries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the town
prospered again with the drainage of the fens and the
farming of the rich agricultural land. The town also has
associations with the Cromwells. The source of the Great
Plague, which killed over 400 people in Ramsey, was
