St Albans Cathedral and Abbey Church is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. As it is noted on the cathedral web-site, The Abbey “stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago - more than 200 years before St Augustine arrived in Canterbury.”
Take note Canterbury!

The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban is known locally as 'The Abbey'. It is a fascinating mix of architectural styles and materials from Norman to Victorian Gothic (mainly Norman and medieval). The tower is built of Roman bricks recycled from the Roman town of Verulamium where Alban the christian martyr lived. There is an excellent Roman museum - Verulamium Museum in Verulamium Park which is down the hill from The Abbey. The original draft of Magna Carta was drawn up in The Abbey in 1213.
