Tatton Park

One of the North West of England's most popular heritage attractions, Tatton Park is a historic estate featuring a mansion, gardens, Farm, old hall, a 1000 acre deer park and speciality shops offering for everyone.

It is regarded as one of Britain’s most comprehensive historic estates with evidence of Stone Age people hunting on this site and farming activity in the Bronze Age. The estate was acquired by the Egerton family in 1598 and owned by them for a further 360 years. Tatton Park was bequeathed to the National Trust on the death of Maurice, 4th and last Baron Egerton of Tatton, in 1958. Over 750,000 visitors per annum enjoy the 1,000 acres of parkland, Mansion, Gardens, Farm and Old Hall.

The magnificent mansion was built between 1780 and 1813 and contains the original rich furnishings and important collection of paintings and books of its past including furniture by Gillows of Lancaster and masterpieces by Van Dyck and Canaletto. With an extensive array of domestic offices and servants quarters and the Mansion offers a complete view of life in days gone by.

The beautiful gardens portray the Egerton family‟s living history and were added to by each generation, resulting in 50 acres of gardens representing most gardening styles since the 1700s. Worth a look are the Italian and Tower gardens, the Topiary, Rose Garden, Maze, Fernery and Conservatory. The magnificent Japanese Gardens were recently renovated and are arguably the finest in Europe The Walled Kitchen Garden, also recently restored, highlights the importance of traditional skills and processes. Seasonal produce from the Kitchen Garden is available for visitors to purchase in the Garden Shop.

The deer park is worth a trip alone and the estate plays host to a wide variety of events throughout the year that make a visit even more worthwhile.
